We'd love to help you avoid that. Our free Pet Placement Consultation helps you think through your lifestyle, your home, and your budget so you can choose a pet who will thrive with you for life.

What we'll talk about

  • Your lifestyle: work schedule, travel, activity level, and how much time you have each day for walks, play, and training.
  • Your home: house or apartment, yard, stairs, landlord or HOA rules, kids, and other pets.
  • The right match: size, energy level, grooming needs, and temperament — and whether a puppy, an adult, or a senior pet is the best fit.
  • Your weekly budget: a realistic picture of what your pet will cost, week by week.

Building a realistic weekly budget

Love is free, but pets aren't. The ASPCA estimates that the first year with a new dog or cat can cost roughly $1,100 to $3,200, and costs in the Bay Area are often higher. We'll help you plan for:

  • Food and treats — the biggest everyday expense, and it grows with your pet
  • Grooming — some breeds need professional grooming every 4 to 8 weeks
  • Vet care — checkups, vaccines, flea and tick prevention, dental care
  • Pet insurance or an emergency fund — for the unexpected
  • Training, daycare, dog walking, or pet sitting — especially if you work long hours or travel
  • Supplies — bed, crate, leash, litter, toys, and replacements
